CAIRN TERRIERS
My overall impression was that quite a
few of the Cairns today lacked that true indefinable Cairn expression. This seemed in the main to be due to eyes
that were too close set, snipey muzzles and lack of face furnishings, or a
combination of these. A number of
exhibits seemed to have had some sticky substance applied to their heads,
presumably in an effort to make the furnishings stand out. Unfortunately this merely detracted from the
appearance and, in one case, made the animal look as though it had a pom-pom on
its head! I found several Cairns with
incorrect mouths and coats were very mixed - some too short, some well past it
and some lacking undercoat. Movement
was, on the whole, acceptable, though in many cases lacking the desired
drive. My main winners, happily, did
not suffer from these defects.
MPD: (2) 1. Tutching's Crowneast
Hurricane Floyd, not a big puppy, nice expression, level back, well ribbed up,
good bend of stifle, tailset and coat, moved well. 2. Weedall's Clairevona
Acrobat Son, attractive puppy, good
length of neck and coat, not quite as positive on the move.
PD:
(5, 3 abs.) 1. Parker-Tucker's Uniquecottage Rusty Leaf, cream dog, very
wilful and unco-operative on the move but sound enough when he did walk
properly, good outline, head OK with
good mouth, showed well, needs a new coat.
2. Thompson's Castleline Prince Harry, grey, not a bad puppy but at an
in-between stage lacking coat and head furnishings which made him look rather
plain, also a little straight in stifle.
JD: (7) 1. Braybrook's Cloverbrook
Loaded Dice, grey brindle, very typical Cairn with beautiful head, good
outline, length of neck, topline, tailset, never stops showing, excellent coat,
movement not his fortune but could not be denied this place on his type and
showmanship. 2. Short's Glenchess Black Tie, cream, nice
dog, well proportioned with good mouth and lovely coat, moved very steadily,
just preferred the head and style of 1.
3. Confue's Anjofra Bang on the
Door
ND: (4,2) 1. U. C. Rusty Leaf. 2.
Waites' Seveek Country Rambler at Svendalens,
very nice head and good coat but a tad short in the back and moved wide
in front which denied him a place in Junior.
UGD: (6) 1. Harrison & Formosa's Carradine Hudson, red brindle, very
good head with correct stop and lovely teeth, well bodied masculine dog, could
be a fraction longer in back, moved OK, good coat. 2. U.C. Rusty Leaf. 3. Kippen's Chezaku Ferryman
GD: (2) 1. Cadogen's Dogan Jamesy
Cotter, very smart red brindle boy in excellent coat, good head and expression,
well ribbed up, good bend of stifle, well set on nicely shaped tail, very
showy, pinning slightly in front . 2. Ough's Ocedar Blue Moon, grey brindle,
rather old-fashioned and a little plain in head, good body and harsh coat, good
bend of stifle, moved OK..
PGD: (8,1) Very mixed class, 1. Ward's Vanajam Halloween, cream, sound and
very typical with lovely head and expression.
Good coat, topline, tailset and general conformation. I did feel he is a touch on the feminine
side, but could not be denied the place
on his other attributes. 2. Chamber's
Honeylyn Superman, grey, very showy nicely proportioned dog with good length of
neck, level topline, very good head and expression, moving well, less than
perfect mouth lost him this class. 3.
Tutching's Crowneast Landahead.
LD: (13,4) 1. Parker-Tucker's Uniquecottage Tidy Shoes, such a typical
Cairn, right for size, well balanced with correct proportions, moved soundly,
attractive head although slightly lacking in stop, well bent stifle, good coat,
very nice dog. 2. Hughes' Spawyche
Elizabethan Jet, another very appealing dog but not quite the length of neck
and back of 1nor did he have the drive in rear movement, good head and expression, neat ears and
correct mouth. 3. Birch’s Kinkim Kenza
Ruffn Too. Two or three 'dodgy' mouths in this class.
OD:
(6,1) 1. Cameron's Ch.
Stryveling Ivanhoe, a very close decision between the first two. Both these dogs have so much going for them
but today I just felt that 1 had the edge.
This dog did not impress me when he was younger but he has matured
considerably, is in his prime with a beautiful coat and his head is so
masculine and so typical. He is a
little longer in body than 2 but carries it well and scored in movement today.
Lovely topline, good bone, excellent mouth, well presented and handled. Not a
'flashy' dog but all Cairn, CC &
B.O.B. 2. Wall's Ch Shearwater Cae De
Sonhas, this well known champion has a beautiful head and all the essentials,
good coat and showing well, unfortunate to meet 1 when he was in top form, RCC.
3. Tweedisle Crown Jewel
MPB: (7,4) 1. Pollock's Stanedyke's Diva, very typey grey brindle, liked her
overall balance, good length of neck and back, head still very immature but
just a baby as yet, ears could do with less hair, moved a bit erratically but
did enough to show that she is sound. 2.Cameron's Stryveling Amadine, wheaten
brindle, not quite the proportions of 1, moved steadily but not as showy, well
bodied with attractive head. 3. Fyfe's Andrum Love in the Mist
PB: (10,5) 1. Weedall's Clairevona Victorian Ice, red brindle, very typical,
moved beautifully, lovely head and expression with nice dark eye, good body,
well ribbed, level topline, good tailset, lovely coat, very nice, BP. 2. Dolan's
Glenrood Dream Pipit, cream, very pretty head with attractive expression, good
length of neck, correct coat, not showing quite as well as 1. 3. Firth &
Jones' Cairngold Coral
JB: (12,5) Very nice class, spoilt for
choice, first four were all very good.
1. Harrison & Formosa's Spawyche Forever Amber at Carradine, red,
excellent head, very typical, a little short of coat but what was there was of
excellent quality, beautifully
proportioned with good topline, body and tailset, excellent mouth, strong
driving movement obviously inherited from her sire, a serious contender in the
challenge. 2. Hughes' Spawyche Dawn Chorus at Gyncairn, grey,
another lovely bitch with that super head, expression and coat, good outline,
well bent stifle, not quite the drive and showmanship of 1. 3. Latto's Pinetop Gabrielle.
NB:
1. Braybrook's Cloverbrook Cute N Clever, slightly odd colouring, cream with
darker bits on chest and sides, very
nice head and expression, good mouth, good spring of rib and angulation, very
showy, moving OK, coat texture not of the best. 2. Confue's Anjofra Nutty Tart, red, very nice coat, good length
of back, moved OK once she got her nose off the floor, just preferred head and
front action of 1. 3. Peers' Tweedisle
Sultry Sue
UGB:
(4 all abs.)
GB (1,1)
PGB (14,2) Several in this class were disappointing in head. 1. Dolan's
Glenrood Forever Beauty, light red, very typical pretty bitch, neat ears, good
stop and mouth, nicely proportioned with good length of neck and leg, lovely
coat, beautifully presented and handled, moved and showed well. 2. Buttress'
Uniquecottage Gold Tilly, smart red bitch, nice head which would be improved by
carrying a little less hair, well set ears, good neck and tailset, lovely coat,
very responsive to young handler, moved soundly 3. Moseley's Spawyche
Elizabethan Pearl
LB:
(10,3) 1. Waugh's Andrum
Carlotta, grey brindle, won this class on her sound movement, attractive head
but furnishings rather wayward, good mouth, level topline all the essentials,
showed well. 2. Glenrood Magic Berry,
red brindle, lovely little bitch with most attractive head and expression, very
showy, excellent coat, again beautifully presented, just failed in front
movement to 1. 3. Shannon & Storr's
Brenndarcy Solar Corona
OB: (6,1) Dolan's Rossarden Glenmoira, grey brindle, beautifully balanced
bitch, lovely length of neck, very nice head with typical expression, neat
ears, good front, correct coat, moved very soundly and showed well, CC. 2. Phillips' Sarachelle Just Daisy at Jaeva,
again a fairly close decision, slightly bigger bitch but so very typical,
excellent coat, very good body, perhaps not quite the length of neck of 1, very
attractive head and expression with good eyes and ears, moved soundly,
RCC. 3. Short's Glenchess Wild Echo.
